A friend has both a MacBook and a MacBook Pro and she uses both. She wants to copy a large batch of photos from one machine to the other. I suggested she could use a flash drive and 'sneaker' net, but, was wondering about using a cable connection between the two instead. I believe both machines are running Snow Leopard and the photos are in iPhoto. I know about target disk mode, but, is that the right direction to move data between machines like this? (I'll have to check with her about the connectivity she has, FW or USB.) Any suggestions? Thanks |
Turn on File Sharing on one of them, log in from the other, and drag the photos across. That would be the easiest way. |
You need to make sure the computers are "talking" through the Ethernet cable and not be getting their IP information from a connection such as wi-fi. Turning off the Airport should force them to see the Ethernet port is active. A chance you will need to manually set IP addresses. Also, under System Prefs>Sharing you must have File Sharing turned on on the computer you will be copying from. Then when they are on the same network you should see the computer in the left-hand tool bar when you open a folder under the Shared header. A way to avoid some of the networking issues is to use Target mode. Connect the computers with a FW cable. Have one computer running. Start the second computer holding down the T key. This will force it to start in Target mode which basically makes the computer an external harddrive. You should see this drive mount on the other computer and you can then browse and copy the files you want. |
